Synopsis by the Author:
This is an action-based self help book and the main theme is about how we can succeed in the
knowledge economy even if we do not have a Degree. As only 20% of each cohort goes to the
University every year, this book will benefit the majority of the population.
The book is divided into 3 parts:
Part 1 focuses on the strategies we can use to succeed without a Degree.
Part 2 focuses on the areas of consideration for some one who still wants to pursue a
Degree, to make sure that their hard earned money is well spent.
Part 3 gives a list of resources that the reader can use to further develop their potential,
such as addresses of providers of education and Web sites.
The following is an extract from the introduction:
"This book is specially for you. More than that, it is an action manual for you to take action
and achieve your dreams. Since a place in the university is usually reserved for the top 20% of
every cohort, we dedicate this book to the 80% who did not have a chance when they were 19.
This book is testimony that there is life without a Degree and you can still make it in life
without a degree. Best of all, you can still get a Degree no matter how many years you have
passed 21.
Money aside, a Degree is one of the most prized and desired papers in any society.
Besides its extraordinary size, it brings with it honour to the family, a stamp of approval
from the authorities and a universally accepted measure of intelligence. After 3 - 4 years of
gruelling examinations, you finally made it. You'd expect to find a good job and live happily
ever after.
Alas, the rules have changed. That was the game in the early days. Not anymore. A
Degree is no longer a passport to success. At best, it is an entry ticket. At its worst, it is
a liability, because you start to believe that there are jobs below you.
What about those of us who did not make it to the university? Do we have a chance?
Take heart: Many CE0s of MNCs do not have a Degree. And the trend will continue. Think Bill
Gates (Microsoft), Steve Jobs (Apple) and Sim Wong Hoo (Creative Technologies), and you will
have an idea. Like Dr Goleman of EQ fame said, students who do not do so well in school
normally do very well later in life. Or like Dr Wess Roberts said, straight "A"s never made
anybody rich.
There was this story about how Professors in a University were told to be nice to their "A"
students, because they will return to be their colleagues. More importantly they were told to
be extra nice to their "C" students, because these are the ones who will come back and donate
a new auditorium, or a new office block. These are the ones who will do extremely well in life
after school."

Praise For This Book:
"An AWESOME book! An excellent action manual for those who want to take ownership and succeed, with or without a Degree."
- Gerry Robert
Author of the Bestseller: "The Millionaire Mindset"
"Han's book is a timely reminder to all of us that "A Degree is no longer a guarantee of success" in the new millenium."
- Andrew Tan
Executive VP & Chief Agency Officer (SEA)
American International Assurance Co. Ltd.
(A Member Company of American International Group)
"Han's book reiterates the fact that the good old days are gone. A Degree is no longer a guarantee of "being made for life" because the rules have changed. To succeed, we need to know the rules before we play the game."
- Andrew Sng
Area Partner (Asia)
Decision Processes International (DPI)
Author of "Tips for Aspiring Achievers" & "This+Way=Up"
"Your life is an inspiration to others. Those who have the good fortune to read it will certainly take heart that good old hard work and perseverance are so much needed for one to succeed and that one should never be afraid to fail. As Mary Pickford said, "for this thing we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down".
All your readers will certainly take heart that you did not stay down but got up and fight. And as you said in your book, "There is no other way. If you do not pick up the pieces, you will go the way of whining, blaming everything else except your own lack of courage to face setbacks".
How true it is that success in life is not measured by the good results or the Degree you possess. And I quote you, "A Degree on its own does not guarantee success". All good wishes to your book and may you bring out many more such inspiring materials."
- Lee Fong Seng
Principal
Raffles Junior College
"This is a very inspiring book. It's very encouraging and motivating. Please continue your good work and looking forward to see more books being written."
- Terry Lee
President
Singapore Insurance Employees Union (SIEU)
Member, NTUC Central Committee

- Ms Dawn Chew Lay Bee
IPCO Insituform (SEA) Pte Ltd
"It was an easy but inspiring read. I've read quite a few books by the likes of Tony Robbins, Stephen Covey, Zig Ziglar, Harvey Mackay but your book still gives refreshing inspirations, especially when you relate your personal experiences in the local context. The way the information is organised also allows people to use it as a reference manual in life."
- Alan Teo
Webmaster
www.webtribe.com
"Your book is indeed very readable and motivating. I simply cannot put it down ! I shall recommend it to my friends not only because it is pretty good but also to support local talent. The book is not so much about having a Degree or not, but how one should take action rather than just talk about their ideas all the time. Good stuff!"
- Ms Patsy Quek
Project Manager
International SOS
"Inspirational and straight to the point."
- Ms Tan Jong Lee
Assistant General Manager
STP Distributors (Times Publishing Group)

With appropriate actions, my worries are now over and I look forward to every day with renewed vigour and confidence!"

It will also encourage me to motivate my members, especially the older ones and with less education to take up skills upgrading and move forward. Congratulations on the success of this book."
- Cyrille Tan
Secretary for Financial Affairs
NTUC Central Committee
"Han's book contains refreshing views that our students should think about. Windows of opportunity are narrow and do not last very long. Our young should exploit opportunities when they arise and not let the pursuit of a Degree stand in the way. As for the Degree, do not worry - Universities will be around for a long long time."
- Khoo Chin Hean
Principal
Ngee Ann Polytechnic
"This book represents a commendable effort to help many people, especially those who did not have the opportunity to do well early in life. May they find this inspiring. I personally found your story fascinating!"
- Nicky Tay

"I found the book interesting and useful and wish you all the best in your future endeavours"
- Mdm Halimah Yacob

- Mrs Lock Thi Xuan

Ngee Ann Polytechnic
"Just a quick note to let you know that I have finished your book on the plane. I have never read anything so quickly. This is due to your punchy, to-the-point style of writing that I personally found appealing. An excellent read that I am in total agreement with. I particularly liked the definition of luck you described as being something like "an opportunity arising when adequate preparation has been done". Well Done!"
- Peter Johansson
Financial Engineer
Zurich Insurance
Australia
"A great book! My wife and I found it to be of good value. I find your book useful and applicable to our members. Congratulations on a great job!"
- C. Mohan
Author/Training Consultant
The SNIOP Network (membership of 80,000+)
Malaysia
"Thanks for writing this wonderful book. I finished it in one go in a day ! Useful & digestible, it comes in pretty handy for me especially when I am at the crossroads now.
I can't agree more with your harsh fact on career planning and development in many organisations. Career planning is in our hands, because nobody is more concerned about
it than ourselves.
I have had the privilege of your wise counsel in the last 2 years and I am testimony that what you prescribed works. The journey is a very rewarding experience, in terms of knowledge, personal development and self-esteem. There are lots of people out there waiting for opportunities and I will share this book with them. I am sure it will open up their horizons. Follow your dreams… I will mark your word and move on in life."
- Ms Pearl Bik
Human Resources
American International Assurance Co., Ltd
"Very effective and practical. Should be made compulsory study for all schools and institution of higher learnings!
I will personally recommend this book to others and looking forward to more good stuff from Han. Keep up the great work."
