10 Ways To Make Others Believe In You by Gerry Robert

JAMES McGregor Burns in an article in Time Magazine sald : "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership."

People are not leaders by virtue of their position. No, real leadership involves much more. You might be the "boss", might have "president" or "manager" on your business card but that does not make you a leader.

Leadership involves the ability to lead. A leader is someone who knows where he/she is going and is able to persuade others to go along.

An organisation short on money can borrow and one with poor facilities can build, but if it's short on leadership is has little prospect for survival.

DEVELOP STRONG PERSONAL CONVICTIONS

People are more convinced by the depth of your convictions than by the height of your logic. Be a person who has causes and convictions. We live in a day where leaders seem to waiver a whole lot as to where they stand. Politicians seem to respond to whatever others would want to hear.

What's really important to you? Stick with those things. Be clear as to your place in life. Know what you want out of life and where you see your ship sailing to. Practise consistency.

BECOME HIGHLY INFECTIOUS

Leaders have developed inner qualities that attract others to themselves. Here are a few of such characteristics :

  • Self-Starters
Leaders who attract others are known for their ability to take initiative. They don't wait for the committee or wait to be asked to get the job done. They can get their fires burning without depending on external stimuli.

  • Honesty
The fastest way to repulse people and lose friends is to be anything less than pains-takingly honest. The surest way to ruin credibility is to tell "white lies". People will not tolerate a person who compromises this point.

  • Fairness
Fairness is the treatment of people and will endear others to you. When position and responsibility allow us to pass judgment, we must practise fairness, not favouritism if we want to attract others.

  • Humour
There are experts like Neil Muscot and Steve Donohue who make a considerable income just teaching people how to lighten up. Humour attracts people, provided it is suitable, clean and not a put-down type humour. Life is short and making others laugh a little is a definite asset.

  • Positive Attitude
People are attracted to positive people. Who want to follow a sour-pous? Not me! Instead in a dark and negative world the positive leader shines and draws others to him/herself.

  • Flexibility
A bumper sticker read, Be reasonable - just do it my way! Will that attitude draw or repulse people? Would you commit yourself to a leader who refuses to consider any way other than their own? Strong leaders are versatile. They can be highly resourceful by adapting to the style of others.

SUBORDINATE YOUR LIFE UNDER YOUR GOALS

Leaders who have a high degree of credibility live their lives under the guidelines of their goals. They have direction and focus.

As we consider becoming greater leaders perhaps now is the time to look at submitting our lives to our goals from another angle.

Subordinating your life under your goals says:

  • I know who I am and what I want to accomplish. I will get there!
  • I am on a track and you will notice consistence and congruency in everything I do.
  • I am committed to issues, to visions and causes.

WELCOME CHANGE

People will not follow a sniffling wimp. People are not recruited to do a job but a cause. Leader who attract the greatest quality and quantity of people are deeply committed to some great cause. They have a sense of mission.

Sales trainer Tom Stoyan, says, "You must have passion to succeed". It's true. Leader must attract others by conveying a sense of purpose and significance to what they are being called on.

SEE THE POTENTIAL IN OTHERS

Great minds discuss Ideas,
Average minds discuss Events,
Small minds discuss People.

Never see someone for where they are today but where they can go. Within each people is a vast amount of untapped potential. Leaders look beyond the outer appearance to the inner development posibilities.

Go out of your way to find the best in others and you will have more people to lead than you will ever need.

Look beyond the impatience to see the potential calm.

Look beyond the awkwardness of present social behaviour.

GET STRONG COME DECUISION TIME

Strong leaders can make strong decisions and live by them. They don't shun responsibility. President Jimmy Carter is one such individual. On April 25, 1980, 50 American hostages had been in captivity for 173 days. The President of the United States appeared on television to disclose the failed military attempt to rescue the hostages.

After President Carter described the events which led to the aborted mission, he stated, "It was my decision to attempt the rescue operation. It was my decision to cancel it when problems developed. The responsibility is fully my own."

Decision-making undoubtedly is one of the most critical of all leadership functons. There is nothing more frustrating of subordinates than having to deal with a weak-minded leadership who refuse to be decisive.

Excuses are not the fate of good leadership.

SOLICIT STRONG COMMITMENT

Leaders have to sell ideas, concepts and roles. How do you motivate others? Sell motives. A motive is something within that excites. There is extrinsic motivation which comes externally. Money, awards and recognition are all extrinsic motivators. Intrinsic motivators are another type, and they are far more effective because they come from within.

They include motivation to give a sense of worth to an individual or to commit themselves to a worthy cause. Challenge people to make a great commitment.

DEVELOP PEOPLE SKILLS

Einstin said, "you do not lead by hitting people over the head - that's assault, not leadership."

As you get better at relating to others, they will allow you to get close to them. Once they allow you to get close you have a greater chance to influence them. But you have to get close first. A task which demands strong people skills.

LEARN TO COMMUNICATE

There is nothing quite so wonderful as a good idea: there is nothing so tragic as a good idea which cannot be communicated.

The effectiveness of your leadership potential is directly related to your ability to communicate. Individuals who can verbalise their ideas, dreams and concepts - so they are heard, understood and acted upon possess one of the primary qualities of solid leadership.

The greatest ideas are great communicators. How are you in this area? Are you understood? Have you ever taken a course or seminar on effective communications? Perhaps a book could help if you need to develop in this area.

SERVE OTHERS

"The measure of a man is not how many servants he has, but how many men he serves." - Moody.

Now here's a concept that won't go over well with a lot of readers! "What are you talking about. I'm in charge now, I have worked hard to get here. If I show weakness I'm cooked."

This type if leader works hard to control others and lives to shout out commands from "on high". They may be in charge but they are far from being a leader others will want to follow.

A servant puts aside his own needs, wants and priorities to give in to the people and causes he serves. To be the leader of many you must be the servant of many.

"There is no limit to the good that a man can do, if he doesn't care who gets the credit."

MANAGEMENT VERSUS LEADERSHIP

Do we want to be managed? No way. We want to be led. Whoever heard of a world manager? World leader, yes. Educational leader, Political leader, Religious leader, Scout leader, Community leader, Labout leader, Business leader.

They led. They don't manage. You can lead your horse to water, but you can't manage him to drink. If you want to manage somebody, manage yourself.

Once you have succeeded here you are ready to lead others.
