The Search Engine Battle
by Geoff Caplan
Companies are constantly trying to achieve high search engine positions. The problem is that very few are
successful.
When you consider that recent reports indicate only about 16% of the millions of web pages are being indexed at all, you
realize that we have a problem.
The major search engines - AltaVista, AOL NetFind, Excite, HotBot, InfoSeek, Lycos, NorthernLight and WebCrawler - are
deluged with submissions. As a result, the submissions to these search engines must be optimal in every sense of the word.
(Note: Yahoo! Is a directory, with submissions manually reviewed by staff researchers).
TITLE and META TAGS
Before attempting to submit to these engines, it is important to make sure that the most descriptive keyword phrases possible
are included within the content and the HTML code of the site. Have an internet marketing professional review your site
content first for keyword phrasing and content relevancy. This step will ensure that your submissions have the most significant
impact possible on the major search engines.
The TITLE tag within your site's HTML code is very important because many search engines place a great deal of importance
on the descriptive nature of the TITLE tag. Many companies make the mistake of including the company name as the TITLE
tag when the company name might not be at all descriptive of the product or service. A better approach is to include a brief
keyword phrase that is descriptive of your product or service within this tag.
Although not every single search engine supports META tags or displays your TITLE tag in search results, enough of the major
search engines do that you should devote some extra time to developing these two items.
The first area you should seriously review is your page TITLE.
You should choose your TITLE tag very carefully because in some search engines it will identify your page in the search results.
Your TITLE tag should be approximately 60 characters in length and should contain a few of your keywords, it should be
descriptive, and it should attract the searcher to click on your link.
META tags are snippets of HTML code placed within the site specifically to "assist" search engines with better indexing.
Although some sites still rank high without META tags, it's very important to include these because more search engines are
recognizing them as useful aids in indexing.
The most important META tags are the "keywords" and description" tags but there are many optional tags that can be useful in
optimizing a web site. The META tags always appear within the open and close HEAD tags within the HTML code.
An excellent tutorial on the use of META tags is available on the Web at:
