25 Internet Marketing Tips
by Gerry Robert

I. Website URL Submissions.

1. Do not expect to post your site to the World Wide Web, and expect to start receiving hits. The only one who knows you are there is you and your site provider. After your site has been posted on the web, you need to let the world know about it. Start by submitting your URL site information to the following sites. These companies will list your site in numerous Search Engines, and directories at little or no cost to you.

Scott Banister's Submit It: http://www.submit-it.com. This is the most popular of all the Submission sites. You have various choices of programs now available. You can post to some 15 Search engines and directories Free and automatically with the completion of one online form.

NEW: For those that are seeking more exposure Submit It is now offering their new Gold version that will enable you for an annual fee of $59.95 to submit to almost 300 more. The process involves completing one form. To Submit to the site you must individually submit to each one.

Free Links: This site will let you post manually to over 200 directories and Search engines worldwide. Their address is http://www.freelinks.com. There is no cost for any submission to the sites offered.

Multimedia Marketing Group: You can post manually for no charge to 100 of the top directories and Search engines on the web. The Site is called the Webstep 100. Or, you can let the team of the MMG do it all for you. Choices vary as do the rates, and the types of promotion you receive for your marketing investment.

The president of the site John Audette, is the founder, and the group moderator for the very popular Internet-Sales newsletter and mailing list. You can find the site and subscribe to the mailing list at http://www.mmgco.com

Entity: Global Site Submissions. http://www.i-studio.com/entity. This site is similar to Submit It. Complete one on-line form and the information automatically updates Free to 40 directory and search engine submission forms. You still have to manually submit to each one for the actual site submission.

For an additional $49.00 you can submit to over 350 directories for 60 days. Like Submit It Gold you complete one online form. From there you manually submit to the chosen site.

**New: Exploit Submissions: URL http://Id.net/wizard/

Exploit is one of the newest and most automated submission sites available on the web. Like Submit-It you can submit for free to some 15 sites and directories by completing one online form. Additionally, for $25.00 U.S. you can submit to some 200 others automatically and some 200 more manually. I am a subscriber to Exploit and to Submit-It Gold. I recommend them both. In using Exploit it only took me 15 minutes to submit to over 200 directories. Submit-It will take longer but enables you to post to more search engines and directories.

II. How to Submit Your URL.

Once at the sites follow their on-line form submission directions. Use keywords that users would use to find your category. Web users search the Internet by topics and keywords using various Search engines. Use keywords that are in your web page. All of the major submission sites explain the reason for this great detail. Keywords you use in your webpage stand the strongest chance of attracting visitors to your site.

Your site will be listed in most of the directories within 2 to 3 weeks. Some directories list your site immediately after your submission and will send you a email confirmation. Most do not. I recommend following up on all the sites to ensure yours is listed 3 to 4 weeks after the posting notification.

2. In your spare moments, go to any of the larger Search Engines (Webcrawler, Yahoo, Infoseek) and type in the key word "directory" or "directories." Many will appear where you can go to and list your site for free. All it takes to do this is just 5-10 minutes per directory listing. Don't forget to surf to the other directory links on these directory pages. They will lead you to many more where you can add your free site listing.

3. Consider the services of companies like AAA Internet Promotions and Multimedia Marketing Group. For a nominal amount they will list your site in over 100 directories and search engines. AAA is located at http://www.websitepromote.com/home.htm., and MMG can be found at http://www.mmgco.com.

III. Website Marketing Resources

4. Read books available on marketing on the Internet. Barnes and Nobles, hometown bookstores, and your local library should have a large selection of these books available to help your marketing efforts. Two books that I found very helpful were "More Internet for Dummies." by John R. Levine and Margaret Levine Young and "Guerrilla Marketing On-line" by Jay Conrad Levinson, and Charles Rubin. Another recommendation by the same is "More Guerrilla Weapons" now available in the marketplace and can also be ordered online.

5. Visit Guerrilla Marketing's On-line homepage. http://www.gmarketing.com. You will find excellent selling and marketing tips you can use on and off of the Internet. They also have a very informative on-line weekly newsletter that you can subscribe to for FREE.

IV. The All Important Email Marketing Response.

6. Use your Email to communicate quickly and rapidly back to your site visitors. Spend time learning how to use it, and learning how to make it bring business to you. Check constantly to make sure it is working by sending test messages to yourself. Always Follow up to ensure your messages have been received. Email servers do go down, and messages can be lost in Cyberspace.

7. Use E-mail signatures on every document you send out. This is similar to giving someone a business card over the Internet. The signatures tells what you do, and if written correctly will bring many new visitors to your site. To learn more about signatures read the book "Guerrilla Marketing On-line" and "More Guerrilla Weapons" by Jay Conrad Levinson and Charles Rubin. You will find many other excellent on-line and off-line marketing tips in this book.

*Try to keep your main signature to no more than 6 lines. More than that is considered a nuisance on the web.*

V. Advertising Your Website To The World

8. Spend time surfing and browsing the web. Contact sites that you like. E-mail these site owners to request reciprocal links. If you have a site we would like to share ours with yours. If you would like to share links, please email us. Remember the more sites you are on, the quicker you can be found.

9. Be cautious in sponsoring and paying to advertise on commercial businesses home pages. This can be very expensive. Before jumping in, find out what directories, and Search engines they are listed on, as well as sites they have direct links on. The more the better. Remember, it does no good to be on the largest corporate companies home page if no knows where it is. If you are going to be a sponsor, use banner ads try and get your ad on the sites first page. It will give you maximum exposure for your investment.

*Want to know how many sites these commercial businesses are linked to? Go to the Infoseek Search engine. Look for Infoseek Ultra. http://www.ultra.infoseek.com. Click it and look for "website links." From there Follow the steps. This should give you a very good idea of where to place your ad on the web.

10. Be cautious about placing your site in Internet malls. Find out from the mall owner how they market it. Mall traffic can be great if people can find the mall. It is not so great if they can't. It is not enough that these malls are listed in the major Internet Search engines. Find out what other ways they are marketing. How do they let the world know they exist. In many cases in order for your site to be found the seeker must go to the mall page first. Unless they know where the mall page is and that you are on it, it will be hard for someone to locate your site.

Always try to get the shortest URL address you can. The longer the address the more complex it is to remember and to find. If you are going into the malls try the get a shortest URL address available from the server. My recommendation is to register your own Internet domain name. Your server can give you all the details on how this is done.

*Hint. The cost to do this should not exceed $50.00 for your server to register it, and $100.00 you pay direct to Internic for the use of it.

11. If you have a Newsgroup reader, subscribe to many Newsgroups and post messages to them. Prior to posting any messages acquire books on learning how this works. Message posting using proper Newsgroup procedure is a good way to bring visitors to your site. Another is subscribing to mailing lists that pertain to your area of expertise. An excellent source reference for this can be found at http://www.reference.com. Try this site out soon.

An excellent book that I found that explains this entire process is "How to Grow Your Business On The Internet." by Vince Emery. The author has a new version volume 2 now available.

12. Print your URL address, your E-mail address, phone number, etc on all your companies printed material. Make it easy and convenient for someone to contact you and find your site. Remember, if they do not know where you are, they will not come.

13. In off-line Classified ads (print media) include your URL and E-mail addresses. Use this resource to your marketing advantage to attract visitors to your site.

14. Update your web site often. Let the world know you have added new exciting items to your site. Highlight these areas by using the word "new." On our site we have added new on line forms, and new animated graphics. *Internet marketing is not static, it is an ongoing process. Putting your site on the web is not the end of your journey, it is the beginning.*

15. On your site include the words "Make this page a bookmark." Also, if you have a link to a Search engine on your page, suggest visitors return to your site to start their search. On our site we will be using Cyber411. http://cyber411.com. This is a Search Engine that searches all the engines at once. Watch for it. Try it out at our site. It will be available soon.

VI. Provide The Convenience of Accepting Major Credit Cards, and Checks.

16. Increase your Sales and Profits by accepting Visa/Mastercard, and major credit cards and checks for all your Internet purchases.

Here is just one reason why. For every $9.00 your customer spends in cash they will spend $40.00 using their credit card. Your competitors on and off of the web are accepting credit cards and checks for payment. In order to successfully compete and market on the Internet you must provide this impulse buying convenience to the public.

*Prominently Display The Card Logos On Your Site And Let The World Know You Accept Major Credit Cards.*

You can learn how to accept credit cards in your business by going to http://www.natlcard.com or emailing bkeiffer@natlcard.com.

They are now offering in addition to credit card services Cybercash, ATM Cash Machines, Check Guarantee, Checks By Phone, and Automatic Electronic Billing, and Secured "Real Time" Credit Card Processing.

VII. Internet Service (ISP's) and Web Host Providers

17. Find an internet service provider (ISP) that will offer you on-line access 24 hours a day. These companies normally will provide the on-line functions, E-mail, and optional newsgroup reading, and posting software. You can expect to pay from $15.00 to $100.00 per month for the 24 hour service.

GTE, AT&T, and America Online have all recently announced price reductions in their dial up offerings. Call them or email them to compare services and pricing.

18. Check user references of these services. Find out if they have had delays in getting on line, or have had problems with the E-mail receipts and transmissions. If they have experienced on going difficulty you may want to seek another provider.

VIII. Website Design Tips

19. Eliminate large image maps and graphics on your home page. Use small thumbnail graphics. On-line users do not want to wait for large pictures to download. If they have to wait for any long period of time, with a click of their mouse they are gone, never to return. Not all browsers work the same. The rule of thumb is this. The bigger the graphic the longer it takes.

20. Addding Sound, Video, Animation on your website. The jury is still out on this. A year ago I personally would not have recommended using Sound or Animation. However, technology has now made enough advances that you can use small amounts of the above, with the exception of video on your site. Video files still take 15-20 minutes to download. This is a long time. Worse the average video only lasts 5-10 seconds. Plus, in order for to hear it, in many cases extra steps may be needed to create an on line viewer first.

Regarding 2 browsers, Netscape and Microsoft Explorer, I find Microsoft Explorer to be the clear winner when it comes to sound, and video. The Explorer version already has configured the needed viewers (no extra setup is needed) whereas Netscape has not. In order to use the viewer on Netscape you must go to extra steps to setup the needed viewers.

21. Use online accounting programs to track your site visitors. Email your visitors back thanking them for visiting your site. We use the popular Webaudit accounting program. The service is free for 15 days. After that the service is about $5.00 per month. They can be found at http://www.wishing.com/webaudit/wa.html.

IX. Miscellaneous Marketing Tips

22. Try and give away something free. Give the market a reason to contact you. What you are reading right now is an excellent example. One contact could create a lifetime relationship. Value these requests and respond to their message politely, quickly, and professionally.

23. Ask for everyone's input regarding your site.

24. Want to locate someone's E-mail address? Two excellent sites I have discovered are Fourll and Lookup. They are located at http://www.fourll.com and http://www.lookup.com. Lookup enables you to search for E-mail addresses in many categories. Give it a try. You can even search for the E-mail addresses of your former high school classmates.

****Update: Four11 and Lookup have recently merged. You can learn all the details at their sites.****

****A similar service known as "People Finder" is now available on the Magellan search engine site. The URL is http://www.mckinley.com. Just type in the name you want and the search engine will do the rest.

*Magellan and Excite have recently merged. To find the "People Finder" go to the Excite Search engine (excite.com) and look for "People Finder."

25. Consider using an autoresponder after you are up and running comfortably to answer all your Email message requests for information. Instead of having to manually answer your messages they are automatically sent back in seconds via an autoresponder to anyone who is requesting your information. The average monthly amount for an autoresponder is between $10.00-$15.00. Most services now provide tracking and email followup. Depending on the amount of requests you receive an autoresponder is an excellent online investment.
