A Meaningful Look At Public Relations
by Tony Ault
I believe that everything you do, whether with friends, at work or in public you need to
promote yourself. One of the best ways to promote yourself is to be of help to others,
which it seems you ("awesomelife.com") have choosen to do. This is good public relations.
There is an old saying I ascribe too: What goes around, comes around. If you
do good. If you do what is right. Good will return to you and right will be
on your side.
On the professional level we can say public relations is any effort or
measures undertaken to promote in the public mind a favorable feeling toward
a person, product, service, business or organization. The goal of public
relations is to create and hold the goodwill of others. The measuring stick
of goodwill is public opinion.
Historically, in the United States Ivy Lee (1877-1834) is considered the
"father of modern public relations." He opened a publicity office in New
York City in 1904. In a short time he was retained by several major
corporations anxious to offset some of the stigma placed upon them after the
press revealed deplorable working conditions and questionable financial
manipulations in their plants.
Up until that time some corporations espoused what they called the "public
be damned" attitude and continued with business as usual. Lee, instead
rejected that idea and instead wrote:
"...Our plan is, frankly and openly, on behalf of business concerns and
public institutions, to supply to the press and public of the United States
prompt and accurate information concerning subjects which it is of value and
interest to the public to know about."
An example of good and bad public relations may be best described through
actual events that happened to two or our United States President. William
Howard Taft and William Clinton.
The world knows what happened in the Clinton/Monica Lewinski tryst. When the
word got out that Clinton had an affair with Lewinski and a federal
investigation was launched, he publically denied ever having any
relationship with her. When the evidence showed the opposite, he grudgingly
admitted his error, but not before his popularity among the people of the
nation sunk to the lowest level of any U.S. President in history. It still
remains low.
On the other hand President William Howard Taft, a strong businessman and
president, was publically accused of fathering a child out of wedlock. In
his era, 1909-1915, such an act was one of the most immoral in polite
society. Taft, did have a child our of wedlock which he described as a love
child, and publically admitted his act. He humbly ask Americans for their
forgiveness. They readily forgave him this solitary act and lauded his
honesty. He excercised the best in public relations.
In both of these cases the key was honesty.
This is what I believe is the crust of good public relations. Be honest
with others. Be truthful, straightforward. Be honest with yourself about
your product, your services and your desire to help others in business.
If you make a mistake, and we do make mistakes, admit it and do everything
in your power to correct it. If you create good products and do good work,
you will win the public's approval.
